Over the past week, we have witnessed a sharp and sudden drop in the Dow Industrials, triggered by new tariffs imposed on several foreign countries. This downturn, and other global issues, have understandably sparked concern among many Americans and are fueling fears of a possible recession. Our nation—and indeed, our world—continues to navigate volatile economic and political waters.
As a national Catholic development consulting firm moving into our 36th year of business, we want to speak directly to our Catholic school, parish, and (arch)diocesan leaders, particularly those currently engaged in one of our capital campaigns, annual funds, or other strategic initiatives. At present, ISPD is walking with numerous schools and/or parishes across the country as they seek to build new facilities, fuel endowments, renovate aging structures, restore sacred worship spaces, provide tuition assistance, and/or strategically plan for their future. We are deeply aware that market shifts like the one we’ve seen this past week can raise legitimate questions: Is this the right time to invite people to invest in our Catholic institutions? Will people want to assist in planning for our future? Should we alter our plans?
Let us offer a few thoughts grounded in 36 years of working in Catholic development—and grounded, most importantly, in faith.
- Do Not Panic. This is a Moment for Steadfast Leadership.
History teaches us that world situations and markets fluctuate. Over the years, we have guided schools and parishes through economic downturns, political upheaval, natural disasters, and even a global pandemic. Each time, we reminded our clients: strategic planning, capital campaigns, and other forward-looking initiatives are not about the market; they are about your mission. While the current drop in the stock market may temporarily affect donors’ decisions regarding appreciated securities, this is not a permanent state. The economy moves in cycles, and seasoned investors know how to adjust their giving strategy without abandoning their generosity. - The Case for Your Campaign Remains Strong—Stronger Than Ever.
Our clients are not building shopping malls or speculating in markets. You are building schools that educate and evangelize the next generation. You are restoring churches that bring the sacraments to the people of God. You are expanding facilities that will serve your communities for decades. The urgency and value of your priorities have not diminished. If anything, uncertain times remind people of the need for the permanent, the sacred, the enduring—and our Catholic institutions are just that.As importantly, the people you serve will continue to need your mission and your initiatives now as much as or more than ever before. This truth applies especially to parishes and schools serving people who live economically and/or socially on the margins. These members of our spiritual and civic communities need the faith, the education, the life skills, and the social capital that Catholic parishes and schools bring. - Your Donors Are Resilient and Mission-Driven.
Roughly 50% of the funds raised in our campaigns come from individuals contributing appreciated securities. While they may wait a few days—or even a few weeks—to decide how and when to give, they will not walk away from their faith or your campaign. Major donors plan for the long-term. Their giving is not based on a single week in the market but on a lifetime of commitment to the Church and their values. Stay connected to them. Communicate your vision. Invite them – through their input, advice, and other involvement — into the story you’re writing. - We’re in This Together.
At ISPD, we are not just your consultants—we are your companions in ministry. We are continuing forward with our strategic initiatives because we believe in the mission, and we believe in our shared future. We will help you adapt to the moment while staying faithful to the process. If some donors need to delay a gift, we’ll help you reframe your timelines. If you need a reassuring voice to talk to your board or finance council, we’ll be there. Our strength is in our people and our process—and that strength is unshaken. - Now Is the Time to Be Bold in Faith.
Throughout Scripture, the people of God moved forward even when the road was uncertain. They built, planted, worshipped, and gave even when it seemed the wrong time. Why? Because faith does not wait for perfect conditions. Faith acts with hope and trust in God’s providence.
Let us be clear: now is not the time to hit the brakes. Now is the time to lead with conviction, to communicate with clarity, and to walk forward together — rooted in the belief that God is right besides us as we continue to develop our schools, our parishes, or our Catholic communities.
ISPD will walk with you, side-by-side, every step of the way. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. E-mail: catholicdev@ispdconsulting.com; Phone: (985) 250-9180.
